Top 10 Best And Worst Devices For Cellular Radiation

Cell Phone Radiation

A little back Kevin did a review for an application called RadGuard and while at the time we had some fun with it on the post and on the podcast a new report could possibly explain why eveytime Kevin tried to use his BlackBerry with the app installed it set off the radiation alarm. A non-profit research and advocacy firm called Environmental Working Group has done testing and ranking on over 1,000 cellular phones to determine their SAR ratings and share that information. While studies are still being conducted on the actual effects the radiation maybe a few preventative measures wouldn't hurt. Especially considering two BlackBerry devices made the top 10 worst list.

10 best phones (Low Radiation)

  1. Samsung Impression (SGH-a877)

  2. Motorola RAZR V8

Dan Hesse: Pre supply still constrained, Android coming to Sprint

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse sat down at the Fortune-sponsored Brainstorm: Tech conference in Pasadena, California this week to talk about the future of mobile computing. And of course, the Palm Pre came up (would we be talking about it if it didn’t?). On the device, Hesse said that the launch was a success, but sales numbers were until recently very constrained by supply issues, not a lack of demand. And because of the initial limited launch, it’s going to take a while before they can declare the Pre a smash hit or not: “You won't know if we have a real hit on our hands until its been out three months, four months, five months ... It's too early to tell.”

Hesse also took up the defensive against claims of inordinately high return rates, taking the analysts to task for their speculation, “Most of the speculation I read is wrong.”

Lastly, there’s that other Linux-based mobile phone operating system: Android. Hesse commented that Android was not ready for prime time when it was released, and it’s taken to the latest 1.5 iteration and HTC’s fancy new UI for it to be up to snuff for Sprint. At least one new Android model will land on Sprint this year.

Holding Hands with VoIP News

Robert Poe over at VoIP News did a stellar “how to” piece on our iSkoot for Skype software recently. With a step-by-step explanation of how to get going with iSkoot, Robert’s “How to Use iSkoot’s Mobile Skype Service” takes the reader by the hand through the basic iSkoot for Skype experience.

Another step forward for Operation: iSkoot Education. :)

Hit the Jump for more Details...

Underscoring the Skype community’s eagerness to get mobile with their favorite Internet voice community, Robert explains, “Until recently…mobile users hoping to use the [Skype] service were mostly out of luck. iSkoot Inc. was among the few to recognize such users’ pain, having introduced in 2006 the beta version of a service that allows consumers to make Skype Internet calls from their mobile handsets. The client software earned Skype certification in January 2007.”

Robert’s write-up goes on to detail the 3 easy steps for “Getting Started” with iSkoot:

1) Register on our website

2) Choose to either get iSkoot delivered to your phone OR to download to your PC first

3) Install iSkoot on your phone

As he explains, “Once you’ve loaded the software, iSkoot for Skype will be one of your handset’s applications. Launching it will take you to a sign-in screen requiring your Skype name and password. You can also opt to log in to Skype automatically every time you launch iSkoot.”

iSkoot icon

Robert then dives into the good stuff - making and receiving calls with Skype. Step one: program iSkoot with your complete mobile phone number, so iSkoot can route your incoming and outgoing Skype calls to the right place.

“First, enter your mobile number in standard international format, including country code. Then scroll down to the field that says “Receive Skype calls to mobile” and click “Yes.” This setting is important because of how the calls arrive.”

Once you’ve set this up, you can easily call and receive calls from anyone on your contact list.

Robert reminds that “[a]ll iSkoot Skype calls, including SkypeOut and incoming and outgoing Skype-to-Skype calls, travel between your handset and a Skype Internet gateway via your cellular voice network.”

For those of you who haven’t tried our software yet, this set-up lets us offer you the highest quality sound for those Skype calls. Just ask our users!

TuneWiki Pro And Free Version Released In App World

TuneWiki Pro and Free ad supported versions have been released via BlackBerry App World today. The pro version will set you back $4.95 and does NOT include any ads, but for those who do not want to pay the $4.95 can download the free version can be had as well.

TuneWiki is a media player which scans your music library for content and then allows you to listen to your music using the app, but the real purpose of the application is that it will help you learn the lyrics to your favorite songs as well as since they are displayed across the screen while your music plays. Yes, that's right -- no more making up lyrics for songs anymore. You know you did it, The Rolling Stones Beast of burden will no longer be "everyday a pizza's burnin" ... you will now know the right lyrics.

On top of the lyric integration it also allows you to to share and update what you are listening to with all your Facebook and Twitter friends although, don't blame TuneWiki if you lose some followers for excessively sharing all the bad music you thought no one would ever catch you listening to ;)

Comparing apples to apples: two year smartphone cost examined

Over the past few month, we’ve seen several sites run cost comparisons on the latest and greatest smartphones from each of the top four carriers in the US. Good — presenting readers with cost analysis is always a good idea. We’re finding that just about all of these comparisons do so on the high end of the spectrum however, comparing the cost of owning each of these great smartphones along with the most expensive plans available from their respective carrier. Fair enough, we suppose. The simple fact of the matter is that not everyone is interested in an expensive unlimited plan though. For these people, comparing the maximum possible cost of several smartphones definitely makes for an exiting read, but we don’t know how useful it really is.

Unlimited plans continue to gain popularity as cost is driven down but the fact of the matter is that they’re just not for everyone. As such, rather than compare the highest possible cost of four popular smartphones maybe it makes a bit more sense to compare their relative entry-level costs — the base price, where most comparisons happen. Yeah, let’s give that a shot…

Hit the Jump for more Details...

T-Mobile G1

Handset: $149.99
Monthly cost: $39.99 voice plan (300 minutes, unlimited nights/weekends, myFaves), $34.99 T-Mobile G1 Unlimited Web + Unlimited Messages (unlimited Web/email/data/SMS/MMS)

$74.98/month — $1,799.52 over 2 years + $149.99 for the phone

Total: $1,949.51

Sprint, Palm Pre

Handset: $199.99 (after $100 rebate)
Monthly cost: $69.99 Everything Data Plan (450 minutes, unlimited nights/weekends, unlimited Web/email/data/SMS/MMS)

$69.99/month — $1,679.76 over 2 years + $199.99 for the phone (after $100 mail-in rebate)

Total: $1,897.75 (after $100 mail-in rebate)

Verizon Wireless, BlackBerry Storm

Handset: $149.99
Monthly cost: $39.99 voice plan (400 minutes, unlimited nights/weekends), $29.99 Email and Web for BlackBerry (BIS, Web)

$69.98/month — $1,679.52 over 2 years (excluding SMS/MMS) + $149.99 for the phone

Total: $1,829.51 (excludes SMS/MMS, starting at $5/month)

AT&T, Apple iPhone 3GS 16GB

Handset : $199
Activation fee: $36
Monthly cost: $39.99 Nation 450 w/Rollover (450 minutes, unlimited nights/weekends), $30 Data Plan for iPhone (unlimited Web/email/data)

$69.99/month — $1,679.76 over 2 years + $235 for the phone plus activation.

Total: $1,914.76 (excludes SMS/MMS, starting at $5/month)

———————–

As you can see, about $120 separates the least expensive smartphone (BlackBerry Storm) from the most expensive smartphone (T-Mobile G1) when base prices are compared. Over two years that difference works out to a whopping $5 per month. Considering the G1 plan includes SMS/MMS and the Storm plan doesn’t, that difference is made up should you choose to add Verizon’s optional base messaging plan at $5 per month. Then the cost of these two handsets is nearly identical.

So what have we learned here? Look at your potential purchases from your own unique perspective. Wireless plans are complicated and should not be handled on an even playing field; each carrier has similarly priced plan options that feature both high and low points. Most importantly perhaps, don’t go to an AT&T/Sprint/T-Mobile/Verizon Wireless shop and expect to get help that is in your best interest. Determine what matters most to you — whether it’s more minutes, unlimited messaging, etc — and do your own research with those things in mind. For example: The G1 plan offers unlimited SMS/MMS while the iPhone 3GS plan includes no messaging, but you get 300 minutes with the G1 and 450 rollover minutes with the iPhone 3GS. It’s all about give and take… An educated consumer is a happy consumer.

You have to make 100% sure that the themes are built for RC33. I fell into this same issue. It should say RC33 in the title.

T-Mobile Confirms Android Phone Announcement Next Week

We had reported that T-Mobile was going to announce their Second Android Phone next week, but now it's officially official. The news was confirmed by T-Mobile themselves. To quote a T-Mobile company spokesperson:

"Next week, T-Mobile will share more details about its next Android-powered phone, the follow-on device to the T-Mobile G1 with Google."

This statement is really just an announcement for a planned announcement with very little detail but all signs are pointing to the release of the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G (aka HTC Magic aka Google Ion). It seems like the rest of the world has access to the Magic while us patriots only have the G1.

Pandora Android App Coming to Android

One of our favorite applications on the web is Pandora. If you don't know Pandora, it's an Internet Radio station that allows you to create your own personal radio station. You just type in a song, artist, or composer you enjoy and Pandora will play similar songs into a highly customized playlist. A radio station that plays only the music you like. Streaming music at its finest

This is an application that's missed on Android but fear not, reports are indicating that an Android Pandora application is in the works! Pandora CTO Tom Conrad just announced that Pandora is developing an application for the Android platform. Sadly, he didn't reveal a timeline but the mention of Pandora and Android together is enough to our hearts racing. We expect it to be just as amazing on Android as it is on other phones.
