Official List of BlackBerry Devices to Get OS 5.0 Update

Been wondering if the BlackBerry Smartphone you already own will be getting the OS 5.0 update everybody keeps talking about? We knew there would be a cut-off somewhere down the road of older device models and it turns out we were pretty spot on with our hunches. but now we officially know which devices are getting the update thanks to a new knowledge base article on BlackBerry's website. Keep reading to see if your device made the cut.

Supported BlackBerry Smartphones with BlackBerry Device Software 5.0

BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8200 series smartphones
BlackBerry Curve 8330 smartphones
BlackBerry Curve 8350i smartphones
BlackBerry Curve 8900 smartphones
BlackBerry Bold 9000 smartphones
BlackBerry Storm 9500 series smartphones
BlackBerry Tour 9630 smartphones
So what was the ulimate kill point? Memory. According to the article:

In order to optimize the BlackBerry smartphone user experience with BlackBerry Device Software 5.0, BlackBerry smartphones must have more than 64MB of memory to support this version of BlackBerry Device Software. BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 is targeted to be supported by Research In Motion on the above noted BlackBerry smartphones.

In the case of the BlackBerry Curve 8330, it looks like having to wait a year to get the device after the Curve was originally released paid off. The Curve 8330 has 96MB of flash memory vs. 64 in the Curve 8300, 8310, 8320. I could see it being easy to get mad if you currently are using a BlackBerry that won't get the update (especially if you recently picked up a Curve 8310/8320), but really, it just doesn't make sense to upgrade to something that'll bog your device down. At least the Bold 9700 and Storm2 are just around the corner if you're thinking it's time for an upgrade.

** It seems the new BlackBerry Curve 8520 is missing from the list above. It will for sure get the OS 5.0 update as well - they must have left it off by accident. But once there's one mistake... who knows. **

4.5 OS Updates For Many Devices Comes Along

Seems RIM is really trying to bring all devices up to the same level these days, maybe it's with the launch of 5.0 or maybe it's simply due to the browser issues that were noted last week that the updates have come out. I really never though I would have to make another 4.5 OS round up post but, here it is folks.

BlackBerry 8100

BlackBerry 8110

BlackBerry 8700

4.5.0.163 From MobiStar For:

BlackBerry 8800

BlackBerry 8820

All these OS' are official releases but they may not be for your carrier.

DriveSafe.ly Reads Your Emails and SMS Out Loud

There is an endless line of applications that try to make it safer to drive with your BlackBerry. As CrackBerry Abusers, we find it near impossible to drive without checking our emails or SMS on the road. DriveSafe.ly hopes to help keep us all safer on the move with their free application. As emails or SMS messages come in, DriveSafe.ly will read them out loud so you don't need to take your eyes off the road. You can choose to have the messages automatically played, or on-demand through the menu. The obvious downside to the free version is that there are sponsor messages which can become annoying after time, however there is also a pro version of the application that adds additonal voices and is sponsor free.

Download DriveSafe.ly for all devices

Updated BeejiveIM Beta 1.9.6 Released for Trackball Devices

Ran across a thread in the forums and saw that BeejiveIM has tossed out another beta update. The app is currently at version 1.9.6 and includes some cool updates this time around. There are some minor UI changes among other things, but perhaps the coolest feature is the option to have push notifications to and email address when the app is running in the backgound. The new features include:

  • file transfers via link, you can now transfer files to buddies on all IM accounts.
  • push when app running in background (see preferences in app).

  • send voice notes

  • send GPS location (if supported by phone)

  • new chat styles & background images

  • new buddy list layouts

  • improved battery life

  • overall UI redesign

  • various other bug fixes & enhancements

The beta is available in various versions for all trackball devices (an updated Storm version is on the way) running OS 4.2 or higher.

BBFileScout- Renamed, Updated And Now Better Then Ever!

BBFileScout- Renamed, Updated And Now Better Then Ever!

This is a good example of how great donation ware gets better. BBFileScout has been updated recently as BBRocks pointed out to me. Lots of new stuff was included with this version's changelog including a name change for the application itself, BBFileScout from here on out will just be named FileScout. For those of you out there who have used the app on occassion know how great it is, and for those of you who don't now is the time to download this awesome file explorer for your BlackBerry. New changes include:

    • ‘BBFileScout’ is now called ‘FileScout’ The double ‘BB’ was removed from the application name cause of legal concerns – actually this change requires, that you have to delete your current BBFileScout installation [Options - Advanced Options - Applications] (reboot might be required) before you can install FileScout v1.2.0.0. I am sorry for this inconvenience.

    • New Option: ‘Check for Updates’ – allows you directly from FileScout to check, if a new Version of the application is available.

    • Renamed ‘Stack’ to ‘vClipboard’ in the hope that this is easier to understand for most of the users how copy and move operations can be performed.

    • New â€Å“Search for text” function in the integrated text editor (incl. â€Å“Find next” function and case sensitive/case insensitive switch)

    • New keyboard shortcut: + (M)odify Image

    • New Thumbnail Option: ‘Do not try to reload broken images’ – when you have specified a ‘Thumbnail-Store Directory’ FileScout can also store the information about broken images – so the next time folders with broken images are opened there will be no warning message for the same files again.

    • If ‘Confirm Delete of files & directories’ is enabled, and you want to delete multiple files you have a new checkbox in the confirm dialogue: ‘Do not ask again for this selection?’ – once this is checked, all files of the selection will be deleted without additional confirmation.

Some great changes there but please keep in mind, you must be running OS 4.3+ to use this application. As always, this application remains donationware meaning if you download it, use it and love please donate to help keep the development going.

Enhanced Gmail Plugin For BlackBerry Now Available!

*UPDATE* - It's been pointed out at this time the Storm 2 has this feature built right in so users will not even have to download the app to use it, that version is at 2.0.0.13 but, it's not know at this time if that will be standard across future devices as of yet.

We've been hearing for a while now that RIM was working on a plugin for Gmail users that was going to bring a bunch of additional features when it came to handling Gmail on your BlackBerry. Finally, it is now available for all users to download--if you can get the link working right, RIM seems to be having issues with the links issued via BIS accounts, but have an alternate page as well. The new plug includes some great new features for Gmail users such as:

Add and remove labels and stars on email messages
    Report spam email messages
    Perform local and remote searches
    Archive email messages
View related email messages as a single conversation (threaded view)

Synchronization only happens from your BlackBerry to your Google Mail account, meaning some changes made through your Google Mail account won’t sync to your BlackBerry(One way synch). In order to get the download link if you already have a gmail account set up on your BlackBerry you will need to delete and re-add your account and a PIN message will be sent to you with the link. The enhanced plugin is available for all device 4.5 OS+ and the official BlackBerry forums has a great getting started guide available. Visit blackberry.com/gmail from your BlackBerry's web browser to download.

BlackBerry App World Now Viewable on the Web

Now RIM has launched a web portal for it at http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/ that allows you to browse apps from your desktop computer. When you find an app that you like in the catalogue, you can email yourself the link to complete the purchase and download via the App World client on your device (you can't purchase or download from the site). It's not a full desktop solution, but it's much handier than trying to browse apps in the on-device client. Overall the solution looks really nice - good job RIM!

    • Fixed volume going to "full" after an audio system alert (phone, email, IM) on Storm

    • For listeners who use the low end of the volume scale, the jump from 3 bars to 4 bars isn't as jarring anymore

Kayak Releases Free Flight, Hotel Search And Booking Application

Kayak Releases Free Flight,Hotel Search And Booking Application!

Kayak.com has released a great application that allows you to search, book and compare pricing on airlines and hotels all from within one application on your BlackBerry. I tested the application out just to see how well it would function and what type of results I would have with it, and I'm pleased to say it works great.

Best part for me was it actually included Canadian listings and recognized all major Canadian airports. The application is very light weight and looks nice considering, now I have nothing against using say--Worldmate, but some features of Worldmate are paid features that also get downloaded when even using the free version so it makes it a heavy application. This is a great alternative with a little bit more functionality added, Kayak supports all BlackBerry devices 81xx series and up.

Free Audible Audio Book App For BlackBerry Updated

Free Audible Audio Book App For BlackBerry Updated

Audible.com, which provides a free audio book application for BlackBerry devices, recently got a nice overhaul. Previously users had stated the application was a little slow and sluggish and really didn't perform that well on BlackBerry devices. This time around with the version being updated to 1.4.2, Audible has their application working quite fine. New updates and fixes are as listed below:

    • All screens have been optimized for faster loading.

    • No more waiting to get back to your audio. You are immediately taken to the player screen upon loading the application, if your last action within the app was listening to audio.

    • Performance of user-interface elements has been improved. (scrolling through lists, audio playback buttons, etc.)

    • My Library is now stored directly on your device for faster loading of your purchased titles.

    • Support for the Curve 8900

    • Audio playback bug while Audible for BlackBerry is minimized has been fixed

    • Improved support for BlackBerry Enterprise Servers

    • Landscape typing for the BlackBerry Storm now supported

If you have used the Audible application before and were not happy with it, try it out again as the update really does fix a lot of concerns. With over 60,000 titles available for download or streaming and plenty of free content to go around, surely worth a look.

Free Forward, Reply and Edit Application

A long running ache with BlackBerry email is not being able to edit when replying or forwarding. A new app from bberryapp.com changes that. Forward, Reply & Edit integrates with your BlackBerry messages and allows you to do just that. Open an email, choose Forward & Edit or Reply & Edit from the menu and you can change any of the content in the email. Why this isn't a standard feature is beyond me. My only gripe with this is that to activate you are required to send an email to a friend letting them know about the application. Not much to ask for a free app, but it may be spammy to some. You can snag Forward, Reply & Edit free OTA from this link.

Free App Start Me Up Automatically Runs Applications

Start Me Up by ShaoSoft is a small app that will automatically run applications on your device after booting. This is extremely handy for users with multiple applications that don't have an auto-start option. Instead of going through apps one by one and running them, you can now set them to start up on their own when your device reboots. You can choose multiple applications, and even set a delay time (handy for some apps that require a network connection before running). Start Me Up is in the early stages.

    BTSidekick for BlackBerry

BTSidekick is one of the many applications out there that will help you, as they say, "find the things you need while on the move". It offers quick access to various businesses located near you, all categorized for convenience. It takes 411, and the map that is probably plastered across your dash, out of the equation and puts rapid, easy searches in your hands. Of course, you should make sure you concentrate on the road, not the screen - pull over to conduct your search. Hit the Jump for more Details...

    About BTSidekick

BTSidekick is powered by CPSA (Canadian Professional Sales Association), based out of Toronto. It's currently in beta (version1.0.1) and is available on the following BlackBerry smartphones, running OS 4.2 or higher; Bold, Curve, Curve 8900, 88xx, Pearl and Pearl Flip. There's no word yet as to when other models will see some support. CPSA also offers a TravelSave program, which helps save you money on hotel, car rentals, insurance and more. I'm not a member, so I don't know the exact savings. Pretty sneaky to have a travel app AND a travel program, no?

    The application uses both GPS and cellular triangulation to detect where you are, making it available for non GPS-enabled BlackBerrys. Using BTSidekick is pretty straight forward. The top border of the menu will show the time, selected action and location. The left border of the application houses your main functions. From top to bottom they are;

Nearby: You location is automatically detected by "powerful location detection and scanning technology".

Select Location: You can set your location by Postal/Zip Code or by Address/City & Country. BTSidekick provides coverage in over 20 countries.

Settings: Not much here, except for switching the unit of measurement from metric to imperial and access to the CPSA Savings Program.

Share: Send an email about BTSidekick to a contact of your choice. For this, it also offers quick access to your address book as well.

    About: Basic information about BTSidekick

    BTSnear

    BTSmap

    choose a location

Searches are automatically organized by category, allowing you to search for hotels, movie theatres, post offices and more. If you can find what you are looking for, they've included an "Absolutely Anything Else" section where you can manually enter what you need. Search results can be viewed by list (closest entry listed at the top) or via Google Maps. Each entry lists the entry's name, category, address and phone number. Some entries are adorned by the CPSA logo, which will indicate their membership rate at that location. After you decide where you want to go, you can use the "Driving Directions" feature to view the turn by turn directions.

    Conclusion

While I was impressed by the quick nearby search options and ease of use, I preferred using Poynt, as it offers much more functionality. I enjoy watching trailers, having mapping choices and searching using White Pages. For those who want a simple, yet powerful application, without the advanced features, then BTSidekick is for you. The application is free and can be picked up by heading to BlackBerry App World. Now quiet down back there! Don't make me turn this car around!

    Pros

    • functions are easy to master

    • View nearest location, maps and turn by turn instructions

    • View savings for CPSA members

    Cons

    • Missing advanced functions that some users may need
